What is Greatness Rating?

Greatness Rating is a brand new way of ranking fantasy hockey players!  Created by Cody Baker, the Greatness Rating system is completely exclusive to Hockey Utopia, and gives you a totally unique way of finding the best player available!

Why use Greatness Rating?

While many of the web's most popular player ranking systems are based on single season totals, this leads many star players who were injured or had "off" years to drop too low.  Greatness Rating is a solution to this problem!  Our system uses PER GAME SCORING data, and takes statistics from the last three seasons, to compare the players against one another without letting injuries and slumps confuse things.

How does it work?

Stats are based on data from the last three seasons. The leader in a category (like Ovechkin in goals per game) over that three year period will have his goals per game figure divided into every other player’s goals per game figure.  Confused yet?  Look at it this way: Ovechkin (the category leader) would have a 1.00 in goals. Everyone else would get a percentage of that: .99 or lower.

After following this formula for each category (choose from "standard" or "extended" categories to best fit your league), we add up the player's total, and that's his Greatness Rating!

Disclaimers

  • - Player positions may be out of synch with your fantasy league
  • - Players with fewer than 51 games are excluded (not enough data)
  • - Someone who played over their head 2.5 seasons ago might rank too high
  • - Young players ready for top six who have previously been in the bottom six may rank too low
  • - Players that dominate the "other" categories (+/-, PIM, GW, SHP) might rank too high

Customize It!

Best of all, Hockey Utopia's Greatness Rating is fully customizable.  Download the spreadsheet, and you can make these rankings match your league's scoring categories.  This is one of the only customizable player ranking system on the web!! Click here to customize it!
