Hockey Utopia was founded in August 2005 at 'Drop the Puck'.  Its creator, going by the screen name Gambit, established the forum to discuss hockey-related news, and share fantasy hockey advice.  A year later, Gambit changed his name to The Hockey Hitman, and moved the site to a new forum, called Hockey Utopia.

In 2006, Hockey Utopia gained popularity through its updated NHL Line Combinations resource, created and maintained by site user Puckhound.  Throughout its three year existence, the site collected over 1,100 members, making it one of the most popular fantasy hockey forums on the web.

James Anderson joined the Hockey Utopia forum in September 2006 posting under the username Zoom Waffles.  Over the next year and a half, Anderson helped The Hockey Hitman evolve the forum to include a separate website with NHL headline news, feature articles, and all of the old resources including the NHL Line Combinations.

In the summer of 2009, Anderson teamed up with web developer Tim Brouwer to upgrade Hockey Utopia.  Using Joomla, the website was hugely overhauled to include much more content and features than ever before.
